Effective Public Speaking Tips For Beginners

Tip of the Week #10 – Effective Public Speaking Tips For Beginners
People have praised and respected over the centuries those who could speak well in front of a crowd. The audience is oftentimes left in awe at how these leaders express themselves well and eventually convinced them a great deal. Knowing how to speak well before a crowd is the best drawer of attention to a candidate leader.
Facing a crowd can be a serious jittery experience for some but for others, they found it fun and exciting to express themselves. But being a public speaker you ought to prepare your speech. You owe this to your audience.
Preparing yourself for a talk is not that easy. You always have to put your best foot forward. The best way to get your audience attention is to start your speech with conviction and end it with a thought provoking ending hoping to lead to positive action.
Some helpful tips are listed below to guide you in your speech.

Content
• A good speech summary is very important to wrap up your talk and get the message across effectively. Focus on the purpose of your speech: is it to persuade, inform or entertain?
• The body of your speech should be driven to one focal point meaning a message.
• Know the objectives of the event where you are invited to talk. Your speech should be tailored to your kind of audience.
• Be sure that your talk is meaty with facts, if necessary figures, but which you can explain easily during your talk and make it in layman’s terms. Facts should be accurate, objective and should be from credible resources.
• Have nice, catchy titles to draw more attention to your speech.

Acceptable Physical Appearance during Public Speaking
• Gestures, movements, facial and bodily expressions are very important because they reveal so much about you as a speaker and a person on how well-versed you are on the topic.
• Public speakers should exude pleasantness, enthusiasm and confidence.
• Do not read from your notes, instead maintain eye contact with your audience. Remember, you should speak and not read.
• Dress for the occasion.

Your Speech
• Speaking with conviction is very important in public speaking to gain credibility and respect.
• If you are to give a speech, train and prepare yourself to speak slowly, enunciate words clearly, pause and show the right emotions while sharing your topic. Most of all, talk to all members of the audience as a whole.
• Communicate with your audience – speak, listen, respond, adjust and adapt – if they have questions or reactions.
• Add-ons to speeches include: humor, handouts and audio-visual aids.
• Learn when to stop talking.

What does it take to achieve Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB)

What does it take to achieve Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) ?
~ Achieved Competent Leader Award
~ Achieved Competent Communicator Award
~ Served at least 6 months as Club Officer and participated in the preparation of the Club Success Plan while serving in this office
~ While serving in the above office, participated in a district-sponsored club officer training program
Conducted any two programs from The Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series

When all these requirements are fulfilled, the Vice President of Education submits Application for the Advance Leader online. Is there more...? YES! You then raise the bar again for yourself, to Advance Leader Silver, Advance Leader Gold, then Distinguished Toastmaster.

What would all this mean to you...?

I never knew that my decision in 2006 would lead me to where I am today... from someone whose voice was soft, my audience could hardly hear me, not being sure of myself and wanting to hide in the shadows so others can shine - to discovering and believing that what I have to say actually has value and makes a difference in someone's life, being interviewed on national TV, leading an international business. I do have M&Y Toastmasters to thank for this incredible journey. I see that all the years in toastmaster is to prepare me to take on even bigger things in life as I believe it will for you too.

The purpose of this post... is to invite you to reflect for yourself when choosing to take on the Toastmaster journey:
* What are you experiencing in your life right now that got you interested in Toastmasters?
* What do you hope to achieve? (in your career, your business, as a leader, as a team player, as a partner, wherever you are in life and in whatever you want to create)

I personally feel that this is an important part of the journey.. in remembering why we had chosen to participate in toastmasters in the first place... what was it that got you to come for the next meeting and to enroll as a member? What we had hope or hope to achieve? There will be times when we may just forget... why are we doing this? There were times when I've had a long day and I don't feel like going to the meeting, but I gave myself "no choice" as I had committed to play a role or do a speech - and I show up anyway (even when I had pulled out two wisdom tooth and couldn't talk). Every time I felt that way, and every time I chose to show up no matter how I felt that day... I never had any regrets - as I always feel so energized, charged, enriched - taking home at least one important lesson that I needed to get that day and just the feeling of gratefulness that it was worth every moment being there. That has been my experience at Money & You KL Toastmasters.. and I look forward to share this amazing journey with you.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more... You are a leader."

Toastmasters Leadership Track

"It is not the one who is the most capable who makes a great leader - but the one who is the most willing,"
~ Garry Chow, Past President M&Y KL Toastmasters

That was how I begun my leadership track in Money & You KL Toastmasters in 2006. Though U had my doubts and fears, thinking at that time that others were far ahead in terms of capabilities and seniority... what moved me were those exact words. So I took the leap, and what I can share with you is that going on the leadership track definitely accelerated my journey as a speaker and as a leader. My fears soon turned to love and passion for the club.

I'd like to encourage you to take on this journey with us at Money & You KL Toastmasters by first having some clarity on the very first step on the leadership track.

When I first received my toastmasters manual... I was actually only expecting one manual - the Communication Manual that's meant to enhance my public speaking skills. The package came together with the Competent Leadership manual which I soon realized is essential in integrating a wholesome experience in various aspect of communicating with effectiveness and impact.

It features 10 projects, which encompasses listening skills, time management, giving constructive feedback, leading a team, mentoring, critical thinking, planning & implementation, organizing and delegating, motivating people and developing facilitation skills - all of which is achieved through the different roles that we take on in a meeting - as the Toastmaster of the Evening, Ah Counter, Timer, Evaluation, Table Topics Master, Grammarian and the General Evaluator.

When you embark on your Leadership Track, you request for a fellow toastmaster to be your "silent" evaluator who will give feedback on role that we choose to take on. Once you complete the manual, you are awarded the title Competent Leader (CL)!

After achieving CL - you're all set to take the next step to Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB).

Don’t believe in yourself

"Don't believe in yourself... Believe in me, because I believe in YOU"
                                                                                ~ Teh Tze Chien

I can still remember these words from a fellow toastmaster whom I was evaluating his 6th speech.

A lesson which I took home with me etched in my heart.

"I don't believe I can do this" or "I just can't do this!"

Then,... there was just this one person in your life who was there for you, encourage you, somehow this person seems to know that you have it in you to succeed.

Miraculously, you get through that final hurdle!
Isn't it amazing to be blessed with people like that in our life?
Can you remember at least one such person who believed in you more than you did?

The person who gave me that extra push that made all the difference.. the person that didn't give up on you even when the rest of the world did... or when you gave up on yourself!

Just take a moment to remember that person..
I'd like to invite you to thank them right from your heart.
And if you can be with them face to face and say thank you from your heart to your eyes - to their eyes and to their heart especially if you have never really said thank you to them before.

Today, I want to take this moment to say thank you to all the people who have believed in me more than I did. I am who I am today, because of you.
